Call for Early-Career Fellows of the Vienna Center for Advanced Studies (ViCAS)

for the academic year 2026/27

The Vienna Center for Advanced Studies (ViCAS) is pleased to invite applications for its Early-Career Fellowship Programme for the academic year 1 October 2026 to 30 June 2027.

ViCAS offers a stimulating and supportive environment for international early-career researchers from all academic disciplines pursuing ambitious, curiosity-driven projects that transcend disciplinary boundaries. Early-Career Fellowships are open to scholars who have completed their PhD (date of defense) within the past eight years (at the time of application; excluding career interruptions due to parental leaves, illness, or care leaves), and have shown evidence of outstanding academic achievement.

Fellows are provided with a stipend of €5,500 per month, fully equipped workspaces in the heart of Vienna, a lump sum of €1,500 per month to cover accommodation expenses, and access to Vienna’s outstanding research libraries and academic networks. The allowance increases by € 500 per month for each accompanying child under the age of 18. Early-Career Fellows are integrated into the full intellectual life of ViCAS and benefit from engaging with senior fellows.

Eligibility and Selection

Candidates from any discipline are eligible. We seek bold thinkers working on topics of intellectual, scientific or societal relevance. Selection is based on the quality and originality of the research proposal, the candidate’s academic potential, potential for cooperation with researchers of the University of Vienna and the fit with the Center’s interdisciplinary mission.
